Welcome to "Exploring Beyond Las Catalinas," a new series exploring the region of Las Catalinas, and its surrounding towns and destinations. There are plenty of things to do in Las Catalinas, but a change of surroundings is always pleasant. Last month we explored the vibrant surf town of Tamarindo, and for our next stop, we headed to the sunny seaside destination Playa Flamingo.
Located on Costa Rica’s northwest Pacific coast, a mere eighteen-minute drive south of Las Catalinas, you'll find the picturesque Playa Flamingo. To reach this charming destination, simply follow the road south from Las Catalinas, passing through serene rolling hills, a soccer field, and a delightful fruit stand in the quaint town of Potrero. This scenic drive is perfect for encounters with local wildlife, including playful monkeys, and all roads are relatively paved and flat.
Famous for its light white sand that, in a certain light, has glimmers of soft pink, earning it the name “Flamingo.” This sandy cove is an ideal place to visit for travelers seeking high-end amenities, ocean views, and relaxation.
Get ready to lay on the velvety white-sand beach surrounded by rocky costal formations as a gentle sea breeze blows by your beach umbrella. Soaking up the sun is the quintessential Playa Flamingo pastime and is not to be overlooked.
Playa Flamingo invites leisurely exploration, making it ideal for leaving your car behind and embarking on a relaxed stroll. As you wander, you'll encounter a delightful array of shops offering beachwear, stylish sunhats, and captivating accessories—all conveniently nestled just a stone's throw from the ocean's edge.
Probably the most well-known activity for Playa Flamingo is the scuba diving excursions. The town is encircled by a cluster of esteemed dive shops, some of which offer excursions to the captivating Catalina Islands. These islands boast a thriving marine ecosystem, making the journey to them an adventure in its own right with the potential to spot whales.
A collection of casinos dot the streets just along the shores of Playa Flamingo. One of the newest additions boasts Vegas-style slot machines, poker tournaments, blackjack tables, and both electric and standard roulette wheels, among other offerings
Indulge in a sunset sail catamaran experience. When it comes to embracing the beauty of the ocean, there is truly nothing quite like sailing on a catamaran. These voyages often include delightful activities like snorkeling or swimming. Consider booking a late afternoon sailing excursion from the Playa Langosta marina, an exquisite time to capture the enchanting golden hues of the setting sun. Join us for an unforgettable journey on the tranquil waters.
As we conclude the second chapter of our series, we hope this blog post encouraged you to get out and explore other adventures just a short distance away from Las Catalinas, Guanacaste.
